Why Hire a Transition Consultant

Families are beginning to find that there are fewer and fewer supports in the community prepared to assist them during this critical time.  They also find that as their children approach 19, they are once again relegated to lengthy waitlists before they can hope for service. It’s also the case that these waitlists may not even include the services that the family would ideally like to see for their child.

Part of the challenge is finding what services are available and appropriate for your young adult.  The best people to make this decision are members of the family themselves, but it can be extremely difficult for parents exhausted from years of supporting  their child to muster the resources to locate and vet services and their providers.

This is where a transition consultant can be valuable.  Although advocacy is best developed by the family, having an independent advocate for your child can be extremely helpful.  A transition consultant can assess your child’s needs and determine the appropriate services in the community.  He or she can develop an appropriate day programme,  staff it with trained professionals, and then supervise the programming being delivered.

Every parent has worries about their child’s vulnerabilities when in the care of hired staff whether full-time or during weekly activities.  A transition consultant is able to assess these vulnerabilities and build in safe guards as needed.

A transition consultant can work with teachers, agencies and CLBC to develop a programme that is suited to your child’s unique learning profile and personality.

Transition consultants can take the considerable weight off the shoulders of parents and siblings as the young person with special needs moves from the shelter of home and school to the unknowns of young adulthood.
